Collection of Terms
This glossary explains the most commonly used terms in Dub InterViewer, listed in alphabetical order. The list is continuously updated — check back regularly for new additions.

A
Active-enqs — The number of active projects currently loaded in Dub InterViewer. Visible in the System info section via the Sysman account. See Creating and Opening Projects.
Act as a webservice — An option on the End of questionnaire form that makes the questionnaire return a value as an HTTP request instead of displaying a full HTML page. Only available for WAPI projects with the corresponding setting enabled in Project Settings. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Allow only invited respondents — An access level in Dub InterViewer that requires respondents to log in with a username and password before accessing a questionnaire. See Running Questionnaires in Dub ManageFrames.
Analyse XML — A button in the Import Wizard used when importing a Dub Exchange File. It analyses the content of the file so you can avoid overwriting existing elements in your active project. See The Exchange File and the Formatted Text File.
Application Menu — Accessible via Settings → Application in the Dub Quest Survey Navigator. See Application Settings.
Auto Import Service — A background service that automatically imports samples into your projects. See Dub Auto Import Service.
Auto match lang if empty — An import option that automatically assigns a language to a respondent based on their international telephone code. Only applicable for multilingual questionnaires. See Sample Management.
Auto match timezones — An import option that automatically sets the Timezone field based on the international access code of the phone number. See Sample Management.
Automatic dialing — A dialer mode in which the respondent is called automatically as soon as the contact screen appears. Interviewers only receive respondents with whom the dialer makes a connection.
Auto Proceed — A project setting that moves respondents to the next question automatically, without requiring them to click Next. See Auto proceed and Browsing back.
B
Backup module — A Dub Quest feature for storing multiple versions of a questionnaire’s design. A new backup can be created each time the design is closed. See Versioning and Back-ups.
Blacklist — A list of respondents who should no longer be contacted or included in samples. Can be managed in both Dub InterViewer and Dub Quest. See Blacklist.
Block Control — An action form that repeats the same set of questions for multiple items, keeping the questionnaire manageable. See The Block Control.
Browsing Back — A project setting that allows respondents to return to previous questions and change their answers. See Auto proceed and Browsing back.
Buffer — A temporary storage table where raw interview data is held before being moved to the dataset by DubMan. See The Dataset.
Button bar — The navigation bar at the bottom of the interviewer screen, used to navigate questions, register answers, log breaks and log off. See Interviewer Manual – Conducting an Interview.
C
CallMan — A background service that calculates respondents’ local time every 30 minutes and enables or disables sample records based on their time group. See Time Zones and Time Groups.
CAPI — Computer Assisted Personal Interview. A face-to-face interview conducted on a Windows machine with Dub Remote, or on Android/iOS with the Nebu CAPI App. See Project Types.
CATI — Computer Assisted Telephone Interview. A phone-based interview conducted in a call center environment. See Project Types.
CATI Intro — A telephonic action form automatically inserted at the start of CATI and mixed-mode projects. Used for the interviewer’s introduction text. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
CATI Supervisor — A user account type that can monitor and check the status of CATI projects only. See Supervisor Manual – The CATI Supervisor Account.
Character map — A tool in Dub Quest for inserting special characters and symbols. Accessible via the Advanced tab or Ctrl+Alt+K. See Designing Questionnaires.
Check Quota — An action form used to route respondents based on whether specific quota cells are filled. See Quota Management and Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Client — A ManageFrames user type with read-only access to reports, analyses, quota information and test questionnaires. See User Management.
Clustered cases — A feature that groups sample records sharing the same phone number, allowing interviewers to reach multiple respondents from one organisation with a single call. See Sample Management.
Codebook item — An answer item that is part of the codebook and not displayed to respondents during the interview. Shown in grey italics in the design screen. See Editing Questions – Answer Options.
Condition — A formula that determines under what circumstances a form is shown or hidden for a specific respondent. See Conditions.
Conditional execution — An option within a form that skips that specific form if its condition is not met. Similar to a Skip form but applies only to the form it is set on. See Conditions and Conditional Executions.
Correct Interview — A module in Dub InterViewer that allows supervisors to correct incorrect data in completed interviews. Not to be confused with Dub Recode. See Supervisor Manual – An Overview of Menu Items.
Create New Project — The wizard in Dub Quest that guides you through the steps of creating a new project. See Quickstart 1 – Creating a Project.
D
Database Search — A special question form for advanced users that allows searching an SQL database on the same server as Dub InterViewer. See Special Question Forms in Dub Quest.
Data Entry — A project type used for digitalising paper questionnaires. See Project Types.
Dataset — The structured data collected during a survey. Raw data is first stored in the buffer, then moved to the dataset by DubMan. The dataset structure mirrors the questionnaire design. See The Dataset.
Deduplication — A wizard in Dub Quest for deleting or deactivating duplicate sample records after import. See Sample Management.
Detached project — A project whose database has been detached from Dub InterViewer by DubMan after exceeding the DetachAfterDays threshold (default: 90 days). See Sysman Manual – System.
Dialer — A tool for automatically dialling respondents in CATI projects. Several dialer types and modes are available. See CATI Dialer – Types of dialer and modes of dialing.
Dialer Nailed Up — A workstation setting that keeps the interviewer’s phone connected to the dialer between calls.
DubInstall — The dedicated installation tool for all Nebu software components. See Installation and Upgrade.
Dub InterViewer — The full suite of data collection applications, including Dub Quest, Dub ManageFrames, Dub Archive, Dub Recode and Dub Tester.
DubMan — A background service that moves data from the buffer to the dataset. See The Dataset.
Dub Quest — The questionnaire design application within the Dub InterViewer suite. Supports all languages and character sets.
Dub Recode — The coding module for recoding open-ended answers after fieldwork. See Coding with Dub Recode.
Dub Tester — A standalone tool that automatically completes a set number of test interviews to verify questionnaire routing and skips. See Testing Questionnaires.
Dynamic List — An action form used to store a shared list of up to 5000 answer items that can be referenced across multiple questions. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Dynamic swap — A telephonic action form that gives interviewers the option to switch a partially completed CATI interview to WAPI. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
E
Edit Open Questions — A telephonic action form placed after the last question that allows interviewers to review and edit all open answers after completing an interview. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
End of Conversation — A telephonic action form that disconnects the phone line without ending the questionnaire, allowing interviewers to complete post-call questions. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
End of Questionnaire — The mandatory closing action form of every questionnaire. A questionnaire can have multiple end forms for different routing outcomes. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Exchange file — A file format for transferring project elements (sample, quota, data, buffer etc.) between projects or servers. See The Exchange File and the Formatted Text File.
Exclusion list — Transfers answers not selected in one question into the answer list of another question. See Inclusion and Exclusion Lists.
Export definition — The process of creating a data export from Dub Quest. Accessible via Response → Result → Create export definition, or Ctrl+Alt+E. See Exporting Results.
Export Scheduler — A Dub Quest tool for scheduling automated data exports. See Export Scheduler.
Expression — An action form used to perform operations on variable values, from simple text substitutions to complex calculations. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
F
Fixed appointment — An appointment presented to the interviewer a maximum of 2 minutes before and 10 minutes after the scheduled time. See Project Settings.
Floating appointment — An appointment with a window of 10 minutes before and 30 minutes after the scheduled time. See Project Settings.
Formatted Text File — A text file format for creating questionnaires outside Dub Quest and importing them into the design. See Importing Formatted Text.
G
General Question Forms — The standard question types in Dub Quest: Single Response, Multiple Response, Single Grid, Multiple Grid, Numerical, Slider, Text, Open Ended and Date/Time.
Go to URL — An action form that directs respondents to an external webpage at a specific point in the questionnaire before continuing. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Grouping Form — An action form that displays multiple questions on a single screen. Routing within or outside the group is not possible. See Grouping Form.
H
Hard-bounced mail — An email that could not be delivered because the address does not exist or the server is unreachable. The address is automatically added to the blacklist. See Mail Bouncer.
Helptext — Optional text attached to a form that can be viewed by the interviewer or respondent during the interview. See The Helptext.
Hour administration — A module for registering the time interviewers spend on interviewing, coding and other activities. See Sysman Manual – Logs.
I
Import batch as inactive records — An import option that imports sample members with inactive status, allowing you to activate them manually later. See Sample Management.
Inclusion list — Transfers answers selected in one question into the answer list of another question. See Inclusion and Exclusion Lists.
Info page — An action form for displaying instructions to the interviewer or information to the respondent. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Interview duration — The average time spent on a completed interview. See Monitoring Progress of Surveys.
Interviewer — A user type that can conduct interviews. All interviewers are also registered as Persons in the system.
K
Keep order — An answer item option that prevents a specific item (e.g. “Other, specify”) from being randomised, keeping it in its fixed position. See Editing Questions – Answer Options.
Kiosk Mode — A browser setting that fills the full screen and disables all browser navigation controls, restricting interviewers to the questionnaire only. See Setting Up a Workstation.
L
Library — A storage location in Dub Quest for frequently used forms that can be reused across multiple questionnaires. See The Library.
Listen in — A Monitor Map function that allows a supervisor to silently listen to an active interview. See The Monitor Map.
List manipulation — An action form used in combination with a Dynamic List to modify the available answer options at runtime. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
M
Mail Bouncer — A tool that downloads bounced emails from the SMTP server and categorises them as hard-bounced or soft-bounced. See Mail Bouncer.
ManageFrames User — A user type with login access to Dub ManageFrames and Dub Planner.
Manual dialing — A dialer mode in which the interviewer dials each digit of the phone number manually.
Media — Dub Quest support for embedding sounds, videos, images and Flash objects in a questionnaire. See Media.
Member poll — A survey type accessible only to logged-in panel members. See Quickstart 3 – Running a Questionnaire.
Message Center — A function in Dub InterViewer that allows supervisors to send messages to interviewers during a session. See Supervisor Manual – An Overview of Menu Items.
Mixed mode — A project type that combines CATI and WAPI, allowing part of the interview to be conducted by phone and the remainder online. See Project Types.
Monitor Map — A visual overview of the CATI unit showing interviewer status per terminal. Supervisors can interact with interviewers from this screen. See The Monitor Map.
N
Nebu CAPI App — A free Android/iOS app for conducting face-to-face CAPI interviews. See CAPI Manual.
Nett N — The target number of completed interviews for a project. For internal reference only.
O
Online Reports — Real-time frequency reports generated from active surveys, automatically updated after each completed interview. Can be displayed to respondents after completion. See Online Reports.
Open poll — A survey type accessible to anyone visiting your webpage, without login. See Quickstart 3 – Running a Questionnaire.
Optimise questionnaire — A Dub Quest function that removes leftover traces of deleted expressions from the database. Accessible via Design → Optimise. See Optimising Questionnaires.
P
Predictive dialing — A dialer mode in which calls are initiated by the dialer based on estimated interviewer availability. May result in abandoned calls.
Progress bar — A visual indicator displayed during the interview showing how far the respondent has progressed. Layout and position are fully customisable. See The Progress Bar.
Progressive dialing — A dialer mode in which the dialer initiates a call as soon as an interviewer becomes available.
Project — The top-level container in Dub InterViewer, which may or may not contain a questionnaire.
Project ID — A unique alphanumeric code of up to 8 characters that identifies a project throughout the system. See Quickstart 1 – Creating a Project.
Project leader — A ManageFrames user type that can only follow the status of projects. Also called WAPI ProjectLeader. See User Management.
Property quota — A quota based on sample file properties rather than answers given during the interview. See Quota Management.
Q
Questionnaire — A set of forms designed in Dub Quest. Always part of a project, but not all projects contain a questionnaire.
Questionnaire Group — A grouping mechanism for organising projects and managing user access rights per group.
Question quota — A quota based on answers given by respondents during the interview. Requires a Check Quota form in the questionnaire. See Quota Management.
Quota Management — A feature for defining target groups (cells) that must be reached in specific proportions. Two types: property quotas and question quotas. See Quota Management.
R
Reserved names — Words used internally by Dub InterViewer that cannot be used as form names, variable names or sample properties. See Reserved Names.
Response rate — The percentage of invited respondents who responded. Calculated as: ((completes + screened out + quota full) / invited) × 100. See Monitoring Progress of Surveys.
S
Sample Management — The module in Dub Quest for managing respondent information, invitations and sample records. See Sample Management.
Skip form — An action form that routes respondents past a series of questions that do not apply to them. See Skip Forms.
Soft-bounced mail — An email that did not reach the recipient due to a temporary issue (full inbox, spam filter, attachment too large etc.). See Mail Bouncer.
Sound recording — A Dub InterViewer feature for recording CATI interviews. See CATI Dialer – Sound Recording.
Sysman — The system manager account in Dub InterViewer. The only account type that can create new user accounts and manage user rights. See Sysman Manual – Introduction.
T
Timestamp — An action form that stores the exact date and time when a respondent passes a specific point in the questionnaire. Used for measuring time between questions. See Action Forms in Dub Quest.
Traffic light — A symbol in the interviewer screen used to indicate breaks and end-of-shift. See Interviewer Manual.
V
Version Management — A Dub Quest module for tracking changes to the questionnaire design across versions. See Versioning and Back-ups.
VNC Monitoring — A graphical desktop sharing method that allows supervisors to monitor interviewers’ screens in real time. See Setting Up a Workstation Group.
W
WAPI — Web Assisted Personal Interviewing. Online surveys conducted via internet. See Project Types.
WAPI ProjectLeader — A limited ManageFrames user type that can follow the status of WAPI projects. See Supervisor Manual – The WAPI ProjectLeader Account.
Workstation — A virtual machine in Dub InterViewer on which an interviewer conducts interviews. See Setting Up a Workstation.
